Background Information

A tablet is a portable computer that utilizes a touchscreen as its primary input device. All tablets have a wireless adapter for Internet and local network connection. Many tablets are available with a cellular connection to a 3G network as well. The operating system is dependent upon the manufacturer. Tablet screens are generally between 7-inches to 10-inches with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels, however there are exceptions. Software, generally referred to as "apps" can be downloaded directly to the tablet.

There are a variety of "apps" that can be utilized for education, including eBook readers, word processing, spreadsheets, web browsers, video and photograph editing, calendars and organizational functions, and educational games. Other apps offer access to online textbooks, TV programming, voice to text, and handwriting recognition. Tablets and applications offer benefits for the regular education student, special education student, and the educator.

One advantage of a tablet is that it offers flexibility over an interactive whiteboard when space and size constraints do not allow a whiteboard in the classroom. In addition, these are hand held and portable devices.
